Since I was a child, I have always felt a connection to the ocean, being half Greek long summers were spent on tiny unknown Greek islands, living on the beach where real camping in every sense of the word was experienced. Bamboo huts and tents transformed into beautiful hippy abodes by my parents and their community of like minded friends, experiencing nature, breathing in those salty vibes, beautiful sunrises of pinks and lilac, dramatic sunsets of blood orange to bring tears to your eyes in awe of such beauty and total peace and surrender. You can really feel the myths that were created from this land. This transformed into my teens, where id head off with my backpack every summer and meet up with the gang in those islands, beach living, peaceful, connecting with like minded people who would become friends for life Even now twenty years later I still have solid friendships with the Greek island family and many have since had families and travelled the world over.
I always tried to maintain that Greek island feeling for as many weeks or months as I could afterwards,, when returning to civilization! uni, later work, the city etc, but it wasn't always easy.
It was more than just a holiday feeling, it was a deeper sense of self, of connecting to myself through the ocean, through nature, and the minerals in those islands, and from the beautiful, kind, deeply philosophical Greeks.
I have travelled and lived in many places in the world since those summers, from living in London, Havana, Athens, Spain and the Caribbean. Each place has its beautiful elements that shaped me as a person and Im thankful for. But I must admit that although particularly the Caribbean and Spain have come at the right times in life and are magical, the Greek islands have that special something, that I have never found elsewhere.
The feeling on those islands is of a feeling that many of us strive for with meditation, with yoga, the ocean often brings such a level of beauty. So when living in the Caribbean I decided that it would be the time to complete my YTT, after a lot of thinking I decided that the Greek islands was the place to do it.
More next time, as I sit here sipping my cappuccino next to the ocean here in northern Spain, I feel a sense of Greek island vibes! with a cooler air, different people but knowing that I can look within and find it there, all along, it never really left me.
